On 27 May, the European Commission presented a recovery plan to help ease the drastic social and economic impact of the coronavirus crisis in Europe. While there are immediate needs to be addressed, it is also important for the EU to ensure that the recovery efforts lead to the development of a more sustainable, competitive and resilient Europe, as set out in the European Green Deal. But are political, economic and social pressures casting a shadow over the future of the Green Deal and Europes resolve to invest in greener policies? At this online Briefing, Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, reflected on the role of the European Green Deal in underpinning the EUs response to the COVID-19 crisis, and the main challenges. He stressed that the European Green Deal can indeed lead the way to recovery from the crisis by boosting the economy. There is a need for quick decision-making and the political leadership must ensure a response that fits the depth of the crisis.
