The fact that the Conservative Party won an outright majority in the UK General Election has removed the period of political uncertainty which virtually all political commentators had predicted. Not one opinion poll had predicted such a clear cut victory for the Tories, although they had somewhat predicted the Scottish National Party’s (SNP) landslide in Scotland. Speakers at this EPC Elections Monitor addressed questions such as why the actual election results turned out the way they did, despite poll expectations; how the results will impact the relationship between the European Union and the UK; whether there will be a greater likelihood of Brexit, with the Conservative government committed to an in-out EU referendum; and what kinds of EU reform negotiations are likely to be acceptable to both the EU and the UK.
