Habemus Presidentum! - Prospects after the election of the new EP President

On 17 January 2017, the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) candidate, was elected president of the European Parliament (EP), after the EPP managed to rally support from the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) groups in time for the first round of voting. At this Policy Dialogue, Corina Stratulat, Senior Policy Analyst at the European Policy Centre (EPC), Andrew Duff, former MEP and visiting fellow at the EPC, and Doru Frantescu, co-founder and CEO of VoteWatch Europe, discussed the implications of the election of the new president of the European Parliament, the current dynamics in the EP and the consequences for the internal balance of power, as well as the possible impact on relations with other EU institutions, the EU reform agenda and national politics.
