Corina Stratulat wrote a chapter ('Democratisation via EU integration: fragile resilience and resilient fragility') of the August 2017 issue of the EU Institute for Security Studies (ISSEU) Report, which was dedicated to resilience in the Western Balkans.  

Populism and economic nationalism: root causes and possible ways forward

Juliane Schmidt moderated the public event 'Ideas, interests, inequality – what is driving support for economic nationalism?' at the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE), which looked at the reasons behind the rise of populism, its effect on society and the economy and possible reactions to the phenomenon. Speakers included Andreas Freytag, Senior Fellow at ECIPE, and Shada Islam, Director for Europe and Geopolitics at Friends of Europe.

German elections and the possible implications for the EU

Fabian Zuleeg participated in a panel debate on the German elections and the possible implications for the EU at the Elcano Royal Institute and Fundación Botín in Madrid, Spain. Other speakers included: Miguel Otero Iglesias, Senior Analyst, Elcano Royal Institute; Jana Puglierin, Head of Program, Alfred Von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies, German Council on Foreign Relations and; Ulrich Speck, Senior Research Fellow, Elcano Royal Institute's Office in Brussels.

Andrea Frontini delivered a lecture on 'European Foreign Policy' to a group of military officers and civilian officials from NATO Member States and Partner Nations, in a course on 'European Security Cooperation' held at the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany.

Impact of the German elections

Julian Rappold delivered a lecture on the impact of the German Federal Elections on the EU to a group of journalists in Vienna. The event was jointly organised by the Forum Journalismus und Medien (fjum), the European Commission Representation in Austria and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Austria.

Time is running out to avoid the cliff edge

Fabian Zuleeg co-authored an op-ed for the Telegraph, together with the other members of the Scottish Government's Standing Council on Europe. The article calls for the UK government to show courage and steer away from a hard Brexit that will hurt the UK more than the EU.
