Europe and Indonesia: time for stronger engagement

Given the size of its economy, population and growth rates, Indonesia is one of Asia’s most exciting nations. This could explain why the EU signed a ground-breaking Partnership and Cooperation Agreement upgrading the relationship with Jakarta, and beating the US and Australia to it, says Shada Islam in this Commentary. The challenge is to build a more dynamic and strategic partnership, which requires more investment in time, effort and energy. Europeans need to make up their minds about whether to strengthen engagement, and Indonesia must decide whether it is worth paying more attention to Europe.
