Georgia 2008-Ukraine 2014: implications of the Euro-Atlantic choice

6 October 2014

On 27 June 2014, Georgia, together with Ukraine and Moldova, signed an Association Agreement with the EU, signalling a further deepening of economic and political ties. Despite the many internal and external challenges Georgia has made remarkable progress. But even though the democratic developments have been impressive, many challenges remain and the prospect of future EU membership continues to elude Georgia, which begs the question: what will be the next step? Will there be a clear roadmap towards even closer ties with the EU and – eventually – full membership? How will Russia react to these developments? And could the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga in May 2015 be a watershed moment for the EU’s Eastern partners?
