At this Friday Update, EPC Director of Studies Janis A. Emmanouilidis and EPC Chief Executive Fabian Zuleeg will analyse and assess European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s first State of the Union speech to the European Parliament on 16 September, which will take stock of the Commmission’s achievements in its first year and present its priorities for the year ahead. Which key challenges did President von der Leyen raise and what were the main messages she wanted to convey with her speech? Have the Commission’s main priorities changed substantially in the light of the COVID19 crisis? How prominent are the Green Deal, digital transformation and the need for a more “geopolitical Commission” and has the Commission President added new strategic priorities?
