At this Friday Update, EPC Director of Studies Janis A. Emmanouilidis and EPC Chief Executive Fabian Zuleeg will analyse and assess European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s first State of the Union speech to the European Parliament on 16 September, which will take  stock of the Commmission’s achievements in its first year and present its priorities for the year ahead. Which key challenges did President von der Leyen raise and what were the main messages she wanted to convey with her speech? Have the Commission’s main priorities changed substantially in the light of the COVID19 crisis? How prominent are the Green Deal, digital transformation and the need for a more “geopolitical Commission” and has the Commission President added new strategic priorities? Did President von der Leyen share her vision and concrete ideas on how to shape the Union’s longer-term development and what role shall the Conference on the Future of Europe play in this respect? What position is she taking at this decisive phase in the negotiations on the future relationship between the UK and the EU? And finally, moving beyond the speech itself, what is the overall assessment of the von der Leyen Commission after one year in office and what are the prospects for the years to come?
