EPC Talks Geopolitics with Kishi Nobuo

Wednesday, 23 June 2021

Kishi Nobuo
Minister of Defense, Japan

Shada Islam
Senior Adviser, European Policy Centre

As illustrated by the 27th EU-Japan Summit held on 27 May 2021, Brussels and Tokyo are rapidly expanding their relations to include security challenges, recognising that conflicts and instability in Asia are, not only regional concerns, but are increasingly of global interest. Japan plays a pivotal role in the regional security architecture and is gradually emerging as a security hub in Southeast Asia. The EU and Japan share similar objectives and have recently reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate on global security. What are the main challenges and opportunities ahead and how can the EU and Japan further deepen their political and defense cooperation?

In an online exchange with Shada Islam, EPC Senior Adviser, Minister Kishi will shed light on Japan’s security priorities and outlook on regional dynamics. The conversation will touch upon the prospects for closer cooperation in Africa, the Middle East, the Artic and Central Asia and a common approach for addressing current challenges.
