This online Policy Dialogue explored the different elements of the EU's Farm to Fork strategy, published in May 2020, and whether it provides a sufficient basis for making our food system more sustainable and resilient. Speakers stressed that our food system is under serious pressure with challenges linked to climate change, environmental pollution, as well as food security and safety. The coronavirus crisis has also presented new challenges and has shown that the food systems are not resilient enough. Therefore, the recovery from the crisis and the creation of a more sustainable food system should go hand in hand. Speakers pointed out that creating a sustainable food system is a long-term endeavour. It is also important to put more emphasis on improving social protection for low-income families so that all citizens can afford to buy healthy and sustainable food, as well as supporting research in the field. It was mentioned that many of the EU member states have great resources to improve research regarding sustainable food systems. In general, there is a need to move away from the traditional silo thinking towards a more integrated approach to food policy across the EU.
