This EPC Update will assess the implications of two developments with potentially significant consequences for Europe: the outcome of the 2026 US midterm elections and the latest EU–Canada Summit. The midterms may reshape the political landscape in Washington at a time when transatlantic cooperation remains critical for Ukraine, trade, technology, defence and global governance. At the same time, the EU and Canada are seeking to deepen their partnership amid growing geopolitical uncertainty, economic fragmentation and questions about the future direction of the international order.
Will the US midterms change the trajectory of US politics or merely reinforce the uncertainties Europe is already facing? How will shifts in Congress affect US support for Ukraine, NATO, trade policy or cooperation on China and emerging technologies? How should the EU position itself if political polarisation in the US continues to complicate transatlantic policymaking? Can the EU and Canada become the nucleus of a broader coalition of like-minded countries seeking to defend a rules-based international order? And what would it take to translate closer EU–Canada relations into a more ambitious geopolitical and geoeconomic partnership – and what are the limits of such cooperation?
This event welcomes the participation of EPC member organisations, EU institutions and media.
