Post-Summit Briefing - Deal or no deal?

22 February 2016

EU Heads of State and Government met on 18-19 February in Brussels for a European Council Summit, the aim of which was to reach an agreement on the terms of a new settlement for the UK’s continued membership of the EU. European Council President Donald Tusk set out the EU’s proposals in the four areas requested by Prime Minister David Cameron: economic governance, competitivenesss, sovereignty, and social benefits/free movement. An agreement was achieved, and Cameron now intends to present this ‘new deal’ to the electorate ahead of the planned ‘In / Out’ referendum, to be held on 23 June 2016. Will the agreement satisfy the UK without compromising the fundamental tenets on which the EU is built? This Post-Summit Briefing, which brought together a panel of distinguished speakers, sought to analyse the outcome and the implications of the deal, for the UK referendum as well as for the EU as a whole.
