Europe in the World

Euro-Mediterranean blues

8 June 2010
Rosa Balfour (Senior Adviser to EPC on Europe in the World)

This Commentary by Rosa Balfour describes the debacle surrounding the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), whose second Summit, scheduled for 7 June was unceremoniously postponed. This was not surprising says Balfour, given the UfM’s scant progress, and few, if any, achievements, and this sad state of affairs exposes the EU’s limited influence in the region and the lack of interest from the ‘southern shores’. Instead EU Member States and countries to the south of the Mediterranean are building bilateral relations, reflecting the demise of the EU’s regionalist intentions and a growing political fragmentation on both sides of the Mediterranean.
