Revitalising EU-Japan relations: time to move from rhetoric to action

Relations with Asia will top the EU’s foreign policy agenda in May, with summits planned with Japan, China and South Korea. This Commentary by Shada Islam argues that while the EU-Japan meeting on 4 May is likely to attract the least attention, its significance should not be under-estimated. It acknowledges that revitalising EU-Japan relations will require determination, hard work and imaginative thinking, but stresses the need for the two sides to translate their pro-cooperation rhetoric into action.
