Cyprus - The way forward

At a conference in Nicosia organised jointly by the EPC, the ARI Movement and Greek and Turkish Cypriot partners, speakers were pessimistic about the chances of negotiations on the island's future resuming in the near future, given the substantial gaps that remain between the official positions of the two communities. However, there are many small but important confidence-building measures which could - and should - be introduced without any new negotiations. The key issue is whether the political leaders on both sides can escape their past and look towards the future.

Keynote speakers at a joint European Policy Centre and World Bank Policy Dialogue painted a sombre picture of progress on the ground, while acknowledging positive signs of changes in the long term. They stressed the importance of using the potential of the European Union’s Barcelona Process, which embraces partner countries in the Mediterranean region. Senior diplomats from the region were more optimistic, stressing the progress which had been made, while conceding that much more work remained to be done.


The status of Imams in Europe

Speakers at the Dialogue agreed that the size and circumstances of Muslim communities in European Union member states varied widely. The situation regarding the training of Imams was inadequate in most countries. Improved training structures for Imams would help the integration of Muslim communities in the EU.
