How should the EU handle bilateral disputes? Lessons from Croatia - Forum Meeting

4 March 2013

The Balkans' quest for EU membership has gone hand-in-hand with its search for closure on a host of bilateral disputes, and uneven progress in negotiating solutions with neighbouring countries has often prevented individual Balkan aspirants from advancing on the EU track or consolidating their democratic transformation. This forum meeting, in cooperation with the Democratization Policy Council (DPC), explored how the EU should deal more effectively with pending tensions in the Balkan region and ensure that the Balkan states become future 'good members'. The meeting also discussed lessons learnt from Croatia's experience, on the eve of its accession to the EU.
