The Nordic model: a recipe for European success?

13 September 2005

The policy debate in the European Union on competitiveness has tended to focus on comparisons between the more "corporatist" Continental model and the more liberal, Anglo-Saxon model. But the Nordic countries have demonstrated remarkable success in combining global competitiveness with high levels of social welfare and environmental sustainability. This Working Paper argues that the rest of the European Union has much to learn from the Nordic model. In a series of articles by leading experts and policy-makers, this paper examines the reasons for the success of the Nordic countries in a competitive global economy.
