The issue of Islam and its role in Western society is not a new one, it has been addressed in different contexts since the Iranian revolution. More recently, the aftermath of September 11 has created an unfavourable climate for many Muslims in Europe and has led to misperceptions and inaccurate stereotyping. In this Issue Paper, Mirjam Dittrich sets out the historical backdrop and current context necessary to engage in an inclusive debate on the challenges facing multicultural societies in Europe.
