Emerging from the shadows: the EU's role in conflict resolution in Indonesia

The EU is often described as an “economic giant but a political dwarf”, unable to punch its political weight in the world because of the inadequacies of its Common Foreign and Security Policy. However, as this EPC Issue Paper by former Junior Policy Analyst Caroline Bivar explains, a results-oriented and coherent EU policy has emerged in East Timor and Aceh over the last decade, demonstrating that the Union is capable of developing effective responses to situations beyond Europe’s borders.
