A Plan B, C and D for an EU policy towards Iran

10 June 2013
Cornelius Adebahr (Political analyst and entrepreneur working on European foreign policy; Associate in the Europe Programme at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Associate Fellow of the Research Institute of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP))

On 14 June Iranians will vote for a new president. This may lead to changes in a country which in recent decades has proven to be one of the most challenging for the EU and the international community. Is the EU prepared for possible change? In this Policy Brief, Cornelius Adebahr argues that it is time for the EU to review its successes so far in terms of the nuclear negotiations with Tehran. The EU needs to broaden its policy approach, strengthen its structures, and prepare for possible change in Iran. Plans B, C and D for Iran-EU relations are wanted.
