Cyprus - The beginning of a new era

Amanda Paul (Senior Policy Analyst)

In this commentary Amanda Paul looks at likely changes in Cyprus following Devis Eroğlu’s election as Leader of the island’s Turkish Cypriot community, including the reunification talks and the likely impact on Turkey’s EU membership negotiations. She argues that the talks will continue although Mr Eroğlu’s approach will differ greatly from that of his predecessor, Mehmet Ali Talat. Turkey will continue to support the process, not least because it boosts its role as an increasingly powerful regional player. Other actors, including the EU, must also play their part to help Aegean friends find a future beyond the past.
