Europe and the world have suffered an unprecedented economic shock as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, national and European institutions put in place unprecedented fiscal and monetary support to protect the European economy, including the Next Generation EU and 2021-2027 MFF currently under negotiation. However, the pandemic has inflicted significant damage to the balance sheets of European firms, threatening the private investments needed for a sound recovery and to achieve long-term objectives such as the green and digital transitions. Against this backdrop, the European Investment Bank, as the EU’s public investment bank, can play a crucial role in mobilising private and public investments.
At this online Policy Dialogue, jointly organised with the EIB and hosted by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the EPC and former President of the European Council, Werner Hoyer, President of the EIB, and Margarida Marques, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Budgets and MFF co-rapporteur, will discuss the critical challenges facing the European economic recovery and the role of public and private investments in guaranteeing Europe’s economic future and place in the world.
