With the emergence of digital tools and the digitalisation of health comes the need to upskill and reskill Europe’s healthcare workforce. Considering demographic changes, the digitalisation of healthcare offers an opportunity to improve the efficiency, accessibility, and quality of care, easing a transition to new care models centred on people’s needs. Digital tools can also streamline cumbersome and repetitive tasks, reducing the workload of overstretched health workers. However, if not utilised correctly, the potential of health digitisation will not be realised. Without the required skills and knowledge, digital tools threaten to create additional burdens for healthcare workers to the detriment of patients.
In the context of the European Year of Skills, this CHES in-person Policy Dialogue will address the challenges health digitalisation presents to the healthcare workforce. What action is needed to ensure healthcare professionals are equipped with the skills required for the digitalisation of the health sector? How can the EU support member states in this endeavour?
