The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the European Union and its member states hard, exposing weaknesses in European health systems and vulnerable socio-economic systems. Not only has the public health crisis had a major impact on people’s health, but it has also translated into a severe economic downturn with important consequences for European citizens’ lives. In response to this downward spiral and with a view to putting Europe on the pathway to recovery, a revamped long-term EU budget, including an ambitious stand-alone health programme, is currently being negotiated.
This CHES online Policy Dialogue looked at the ongoing negotiations around the next Multiannual Financial Framework and reflected on prospects for EU health policy. Speakers considered the impact of COVID-19 on European health systems and discussed ways to strengthen them and promote Europeans’ health.
