The 2016 Brussels terrorist attacks provoked widespread political condemnation and public outrage in Belgium and around Europe. Only a few months earlier, in Paris, the heart of Europe suffered its worse terror attack in history. Since then, the EPC, in cooperation with the European Foundation for Democracy (EFD), has marked the anniversary of the Brussels attacks with a conference focused on progress in the fight against terrorism and all forms of violent extremism.
The conference will take stock of and assess current policy responses at European and national levels, as well as evaluate lessons learned. How has the fight against terrorism and radicalisation evolved over the past six years? What have been the successes, the failures and the lessons-learned of countering the threat of terrorism? What are the most worrying trends in radicalisation, and how do we need to address them?

The Europe in the World (EiW) Programme scrutinises the impact of a changing international system on Europe and probes how the EU and its member states can advance their interests and values on a regional and global level. It examines the EU’s relations with both major and middle powers around the world, and how Europe can continue to contribute to a rules-based global order. Secondly, the Programme focuses on the role of the EU in fostering reform, resilience and stability in neighbouring regions and looks closely at developments in Turkey and Ukraine, among other countries. Thirdly, the Programme examines and seeks to advance the development of Europe’s security and defence policy.
