EVENT
LOCATION: European Parliament Rue Wiertz 60, 1000 Brussels
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the EU has taken important steps towards ending purchases of Russia’s energy. These include deepening ties with third countries and tightening restrictions on Moscow’s energy revenues through successive sanctions packages, including cracking down on Russia’s shadow fleet.
However, challenges remain. Dependencies of some member states, notably Hungary and Slovakia, continue feeding the Kremlin’s war machine. Moreover, the challenge has now evolved from that of a lack of political will to a need for practical enforcement of measures already adopted.
During this event, hosted at the European Parliament by the MEP Virgil Popescu, participants will discuss how the EU and its member states can address these remaining gaps – in particular by strengthening sanctions enforcement, further diversifying energy cooperation with third countries (including the United States) and assessing the potential future role of Ukraine in Europe’s energy security, particularly in green energy.
