The road to the NATO Vilnius Summit and beyond

Project
NATO leaders meet in Vilnius in July 2023, more than a year after Russia’s illegal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine, to discuss the new transatlantic security environment. The Summit’s priorities include:

  • Ukraine’s path into the Alliance and security guarantees.
  • Defence and deterrence on the Eastern Flank.
  • The defence spending pledge.
  • Sweden’s membership in the Alliance.
  • The potential appointment of the next Secretary General.

Through a mix of activities, the EPC aims to:

  • Identify and analyse the main challenges that NATO is facing ahead of the Vilnius Summit.
  • Assess NATO’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and what it must do to keep Ukraine (and the rest of Europe) secure, free, and whole - including Ukraine’s path into the Alliance.
  • Provide a menu of solutions and recommendations for the Alliance to tackle current and future challenges as NATO continues to adapt to an evolving European and global security environment.
  • Contribute to the debate on enhancing NATO-EU cooperation.

This EPC project intends to inform and increase awareness among European citizens on the latest developments in NATO security and defence policies as well as foster cooperation among European and transatlantic think tanks working on these topics.
