The election of the next president of the European Parliament will take place next Tuesday in Strasbourg. Already the press wheels out its usual reports of backroom deals and an imminent ‘stitch-up’ between party bosses. However, the truth is much more democratic and therefore complicated, says Andrew Duff. Who gets the top job is a decision that belongs uniquely to MEPs.
