The outcome of the US midterm elections on 3 November will be closely watched in Brussels. Yet whatever the result, Europeans should resist the temptation to see it as a simple stepping stone back to the transatlantic status quo. The deeper trends reshaping relations between Europe and the United States, from strategic competition and defence to trade, climate, technology and global governance, will outlast any single election cycle.
For Europe, the challenge remains the same: building the power, unity and partnerships needed to protect its citizens and navigate an increasingly fragmented international order. Whether facing uncertainty over US security guarantees, responding to economic coercion, advancing the green transition, or strengthening ties with like-minded partners such as Canada, Europe must continue developing its own strategic capacity while investing in strong alliances.
To support journalists, policymakers and stakeholders following the elections, the European Policy Centre has compiled a selection of background analysis examining how US politics and policy choices affect Europe across a wide range of areas, including security and defence, climate and energy, trade and geoeconomics, technology, democracy and international cooperation. These publications offer context, insight, and forward-looking analysis to understand the implications of the elections beyond the headlines.
