Interstate solidarity in Europe - counting the costs - Forum meeting

19 June 2012

The solidarity mechanisms introduced at EU level since 2010 have triggered intense debate among EU leaders and citizens alike, raising questions about the budgetary cost of solidarity measures at a time of austerity and increased attention to fiscal and budgetary consolidation. This forum meeting debated the usefulness and impact of the solidarity actions put in place so far and discussed the different options Europe has at its disposal to stop the contagion and restore confidence in the financial markets. The discussion focused on the costs of interstate solidarity both in financial terms and with regard to public support in Europe.
