EPC LAUNCHES THE BRUSSELS ECONOMIC SECURITY FORUM

Economic Security / PRESS RELEASE

Date: 29/04/2025

Brussels - The European Policy Centre (EPC) is pleased to announce the inaugural Brussels Economic Security Forum (BESF), taking place on 5-6 June 2025.

This Forum is a response to the unprecedented global policy shifts we are witnessing and aims to provide a unique high-level platform to address the pressing challenges of global economic security. Through the notions of open economic security and collaborative interdependence, the BESF aims to identify tangible international steps towards reduced risks and vulnerabilities.

Over the past years, the EPC has been at the forefront of discussions on economic security in Europe, hosting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for her seminal speech on EU-China relations in March 2023 and leading the debate on this crucial topic through our flagship Economic Security project.

This first edition will be opened by Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, and will bring together ministers, senior policymakers, business leaders and international experts from across Europe and key partner countries.

The Forum will feature a high-level public conference open to the media and the broader public on June 5. It will be followed by a series of closed-door, invitation-only roundtables on June 6 on a selected range of issues.

A defining moment in international economic relations

Economic security represents a paradigm shift in international economic relations and EU policies. The EPC has been at the forefront of this debate in Europe and is now taking another step with the launch of the Brussels Economic Security Forum.

Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Executive and Chief Economist at the EPC

This is a Forum, not a conference — as the world fragments into separate economic blocs faster than anyone expected, a first-of-its-kind international platform on economic security to shape the policy agenda towards open and collaborative economic security.

Georg Riekeles, Associate Director at the EPC and Co-Director of the BESF

Economic security has become a defining challenge for the EU in this new era of global geoeconomics. The Brussels Economic Security Forum will provide a much-needed platform to converge and deliberate on strategies to enhance Europe’s resilience and balance openness with necessary protections.

Paweł Świeboda, Senior Visiting Fellow and Co-Director of the BESF
