EPIM Policy Update December 2020

Marie De Somer , Alberto-Horst Neidhardt , Olivia Sundberg Diez , Helena Hahn

Date: 09/12/2020
This edition examines the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. On 23 September, the European Commission presented a complex package of proposals aimed at forging a “fresh start” for EU migration and asylum policies. However, in the weeks since, analysts and NGOs have questioned whether the Pact’s proposals will fulfil this objective. Rather than bringing much-needed structural reforms, some proposals may exacerbate existing risks faced by migrants in Europe.

Other highlights of this Policy Update include the growing pressure on the European Commission and Frontex to investigate and end pushbacks at the EU’s external borders, an analysis of the recently published Action Plans against Racism as well as on Integration and Inclusion, growing scrutiny on European investor citizenship schemes, and an update on reception conditions in Greece as winter sets in. The Closer Look, by the European Citizen Action Service, highlights the impact of COVID-19 on mobile EU citizens.
