This Policy Briefing on the EU’s economic governance with Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni kicked off ‘
The Maastricht Dialogues’, a new EPC event series on European economic policy.
In this anniversary year of the Maastricht Treaty and the Stability and Growth Pact, the EU is experiencing a watershed moment. The Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have posed unprecedented challenges to the Union’s economic stability and prompted bold steps in economic policy like the Recovery and Resilience Facility and RePowerEU. As highlighted by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her 2022 State of the Union speech, it is time that the EU rediscovers the “Maastricht spirit”, where stability and growth go hand in hand.
‘The Maastricht Dialogues’ series aims to discuss the most pressing economic challenges and possible solutions in European fiscal, monetary, and financial policy, considering the EU and the member states’ perspectives. The launch event with Commissioner Gentiloni focused on the current prospects and threats for the European economy in the context of a looming recession and the need to fight inflation. We also discussed the Commission’s orientations on the Economic Governance Review.
