The Brussels terror attacks - Lessons learned and challenges ahead for Europe

Thursday, 14 April 2016

Following the deadly attacks in Brussels on 22 March, and after the initial reaction of shock and grief, questions about Belgium’s and Europe’s preparedness to rapidly and effectively respond to terror threats have started to arise. At this Policy dialogue, a group of experts addressed the strong need for a rational and strategic reflection on the terror threat to Belgium and Europe as a whole. They also dealt with the dangerous evolution of radicalisation and the policy consequences from the perspectives of security, integration and cross-border cooperation, and looked at the drivers that fuel jihadists. Finally, they talked about ways authorities coordinate and cooperate, what lessons have been learnt, what lessons still need to be learnt and how can all those involved in anti-terrorism rise to the challenge.
