As an emergency response to the COVID-19 outbreak, member states prohibited access to schools, universities and other education institutions to 100 million pupils and learners in the EU. While online teaching and learning became the norm across education systems, such a hasty transition has exposed the gaps in digital infrastructures and skills between schools, regions, countries and socio-economic backgrounds. To foster the consolidation and the resilience of education, training & employment in Europe, the European Commission has updated its vision for a European Education Area by 2025 and adopted a renewed Digital Education Action Plan, reflecting on the lessons learned from the crisis. In a post-COVID-19 Europe, these initiatives intend to provide young Europeans with more opportunities by strengthening the contribution of education and training to Europe’s recovery.
At this Sixty Minute Briefing, Commissioner Gabriel will shed light on these initiatives, in particular the importance of developing an inclusive approach to digital education and training and how the Commission plans to achieve these ambitious targets. The Briefing and question & answer session will be chaired by Jean-Louis De Brouwer, EU affairs programme Director at Egmont institute.
