This online Policy Dialogue discussed the impact of COVID-19 on the political, social and economic level in the Western Balkan countries. The governments of the region have imposed strict measures to contain the spread of coronavirus, but have failed to provide an economic approach to the crisis and address the needs of socially marginalised groups. Furthermore, the emergency situation, involving numerous restrictions, fast-track procedures and greater executive power, poses a serious threat to the basic principles of democracy. Although the EU’s financial support has been generous, as recognised by the panellists, it should be supported by additional political pressure in order  to prevent democratic backsliding.
