Cyprus – The search for a solution: Are we nearly there?

21 October 2015

In this Policy Dialogue, four experts gave their views on how they see the current round of peace negotiations in Cyprus, the main challenges and scenarios for the future. Following the election of the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot Community, Mustafa Akıncı, in April 2015 and a reopening of reconciliation talks, negotiations quickly gathered speed while numerous positive steps were taken aimed at building trust between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. Whilst both leaders have shown a strong commitment to a solution there remain many internal and external hurdles to overcome. The panel reflected on why these talks may offer the best chance for a solution for a generation, as well as political, economic, social and religious factors that offer challenges and opportunities; the influence of external actors including Turkey, the EU and Russia; and the need to harness the current enthusiasm and positive momentum in order to reach a successful and sustainable reconciliation.
