Comparing EU and Asian Integration Processes - The EU a role model for Asia?

18 January 2005

In this Issue Paper, Axel Berkofsky examines whether European integration can serve as role model for similar processes in Asia. Stable Japan-Chinese relations and reconciliation between the two countries will be key to further Asian economic and political integration. But the legacy of colonialism and the lack of unitarian democratic structures and existing cultural heterogeneity may limit Asian regional integration. However, a high degree of economic interdependence, particularly since the Asian financial crisis and the recent Tsunami, may lead to partial and differing degrees of economic integration through bilateral and multilateral trade agreements.
