The ongoing coronavirus crisis is already demonstrating how much environmental sustainability, health and economic prosperity are interlinked. There is growing evidence about the environment-related root causes and drivers
of the pandemic. While many commentators suggest that the EU’s economic recovery from the inevitable recession should be aligned with the goals of the European Green Deal, others are concerned about the overall implications of the crisis for the climate and environmental agenda, both in Europe and globally. Should there be a slowing down of climate action and efforts to improve environmental sustainability, this could have a devastating impact on people’s well-being and on the climate.

At this online Policy Briefing, EPC analysts from the Sustainable Prosperity for Europe Programme, Annika Hedberg, Sofía López Piqueres and Stefan Šipka, discussed the interlinkages between COVID-19 and environmental sustainability, and the implications for EU policies with a focus on four areas:
1) the environmental root causes of the pandemic; 2) air pollution as a possible
accelerator of the crisis; 3) the implications for internal and international
climate action, and 4) what is needed for the EU’s green recovery
strategy.
